Nitrite: Nitrifying bacteria converts ammonia into nitrite. In a new aquarium when ammonia level drops, nitrite levels rise. High level of nitrite affects the hemoglobin in the blood of fishes and blood unable to carry oxygen.
Symptoms of Nitrite poisoning:
a. fish gash near the water surface
b. Fish will be display the signs of stress.
c. Red or brown gills.
d. Weak immunity.
How to Reduce Nitrite level:
1. Regular water change
2. Live plants helps in reducing nitrite levels.
3. Regularly clean aquarium. Remove dead fishes/Invertebrates/Plants.
4. Feeding under control.
5. Nitrogen removing filter media also helps.
If pH drops below 6.5, the Nitrite in the aquarium start to convert itself in nitrous acid. It is very toxic for fish.
