CFL or LED bulb for planted tank???

Unread post by jimclassic »

Hello All,

I have a 2 feet tank of dimension 2x1x1.5. I would like to know which is better option to select between CFL lamp and LED bulb. I have read in some sites that CFL lamp is more efficient for plants as it is a fluorescent light.

Currently I am using 2 CFL lamps of each 15 watt and 24 watt.

I would like to know whether this current setup is sufficient for plants or is LED more better and efficient option for plants.

Also, now a days I am seeing T5 as LED in Amazon website. Are they efficient for plants?

Thanks in Advance.

Both should work, but in case of led it totally depends on the type of led used in production.

It also depends on the type of plants that you are planning to grow. Some plants can easily grow with the Room light and some needs very high light
On long run LED is better than CFL and power consumption is also less. if you want to grow a carpet then you should go with LED, for rest you can use CFL but you may have to change them after sometime.

Led lights are definitely better for a high light tank. But buying the correct led lights can be a bit tricky at times.
For example sun sun sells two kinds of led lights.
One called lde and the other lds.
Only, the lde series is not recommended by the company for planted tanks, or you can say that lds series is recommended for planted tanks.
So, it is important to watch out for the spectrum when buying the led lights.

Also the commercial home Leds are made with the sole purpose to home lighting and may or may not have enough PAR/PUR to grow plants this you may have to use almost equal wattage to that of CFL for same result. On the other hand lets made specifically for plants/planted tank will out perform any fluorescent light with significant power saving.

Thanks all for your suggestion and Advice.

By LED, I was referring to LED lamp which is available for house purpose. So I would like to know what kind of LED lamps can be useful for planted aquariums?
