Repeated washing may work, but Yamuna sand will not do cloudy water, I need black color substrate, dats all, will not grow plant on it, just for highlighting, so will not give anything topup for Yamuna river sand.SCORPIO wrote:Wash it carefully, before use in planted tank. I have used Yamuna sand in my first planted tank. Plants grows very well.

Re: Grey construction sand?
What is black seachem fluorite made of.
Is it a rock or is it man made ?
A friend is using it here and the results are pretty good.
Dwarf hair grass has started suckering in 20 days after planting and it
is looking promising

That's useful to know, Kuldeep.mats wrote:There are some sands that are grey in colour. One such sand is coming from Tatta pani in HP. Though it will not be available in Delhi such sands do exist. Another way out is to visit stone crushers. If they are using dark coloured stones bingo. You would hv hit the jackpot. I am writi g from experience and not just hearsay but will not be able to help u as these sites are quite far from Shimla though very much in my state and I don't go in these directions.
Another good thing about this sand from rampur is that it is rich in quartz and extremely good for rooting plants. Garden centers often use this over and above ghagghar sand.

Is there a Rampur in Himachal too? i had heard of one in UP. I hope u will find this sand comng and going, and make a thread for us about it. I am sure it would be as good as anything...

RETTI comes from river.

Re: Grey construction sand?
Friends,
1.If construction sand could be used in the aquarium, it would not be called construction sand. Bottomline - do not use it.
2. Reti in English means sand. It had round grains and is used in plastering generally. This type of sand is taken from river banks. Because of its fine nature, it is not recommended for plants with shallow root systems.
3. Badarpur is known as Pit Sand. As the name suggests, it is procured by digging pits. This type of sand is used in mixing concrete, has large coarse grains and is unsuitable to sustain plant life.
4. Black Seachem Flourite is clay which has been through a refractor. A refractor is a kind of boiler used in the ceramic industry to heat clay to a very high temperature so that it loses all moisture and becomes tough like rock.
I have two recommendations for Partha :
1. TMS (Tahitian Moon Sand). This is a completely inert sand and in case one wants to grow plants, root tabs are recommended. I have seen TMS use in Tanganyikan tanks in Europe and I can safely say that the black is very black. Lighting in such a tank plays a crucial role.
2. Regular planted tank substrate with a layer of black chips on top.
