Help with Macro & Micro Dosing

Unread post by IvarAtu »

Hello All,

I know this has been talked about much.. but I am confused with all the material available on dosing ferts... so I wanted people here to help me out.

This is my first tank in all respects, I started out with the hobby with a planted tank. I currently have a 55L Tank(excluding substrate and stuff), Contro Soil with Giant Hygro, Ludwigia Ovalis, Echinodorus Ozelot, Alternanthera Purple, Echinodorus Sharp leaf and HC Cuba as carpet plant. Pressurised Co2 with 2 LED Light strips, which are quite bright I believe, but not sure about the specifications on them. The current setup has been running for about 6 months now... except for the HC Cuba, that I added 1 month back.
The tank also has 6 Cardinal Tetras, 6 Glow light tetras & 1 SAE.

I haven not dosed any ferts until now, but would like to start dosing ferts now. Except for trying out Flourish Comprehensive from a friend a couple of times.

I purchased my N,P,K, CSM+B & EDTA... I would like to know, how I should go about dosing and the what quantities and what should be my schedule of dosing these ferts. I did read a lot where they say to dose ferts everyday, some say once or twice a week... I am totally confused.

Thank you for all the help

Go for a simple formula.

Mix all of below mentioned chemicals in 300ml of water.

Potassium nitrate (KNO3) 1 teaspoons
Potassium sulphate (K2SO4) 2 teaspoons
Magnesium sulphate (MGSO4) 3 teaspoons

Take another bottle and mix 2 teaspoons of CSM B in 300ml of water.

Store both the bottles in fridge.

Dosage : 3 ml/100 liter in alternate days of each solution in night.

The above mix seems to be quite easy. Thank you, for your simple answer.

Also how about the EDTA, is dosing required on a daily basis or once/twice a week.
Thanks a lot... :)

You can use as following:

Day 01: NPK
Day 02: EDTA
Day 03: NPK
Day 04: EDTA

Rajeev ji,
what about the phosphate?

I use KNO3(Potassium Nitrate) - 1/2 tablespoon
KH2PO4(Potassium mono phosphate) - 1/8 tablespoon
MgSO4.7H2O (Epsom salt) - 1 tablespoon

for my 50G tank at alternate days with Flourish Iron. I still have doubt about the dosing, as per the doses mixed in solution (with distilled water) seems pretty less than the dry dosing.

1. Kindly clarify about the difference between dry and solution dosing.

2.Suggest me the quantity for making solution with my available ferts.

Phosphate is required in very low amount in aquarium. Plants can get phosphate from fish poop, decayed plants/fish etc.

By the way you ca also follow this formula

Mix all of these chemicals in 500ml of RO water and Dose 1 ml for 40 liter water.
K2SO4 – 29 grams
KNO3 – 33 grams
KH2PO4 – 3 grams
MgSO4 – 20 grams

CSM B - 40 grams in 500ml of RO water

Thank You, Rajiv ji... this was one of my main doubts, regarding the amount in gms to be mixed with water... very well laid out... clears things up for me.

Go ahead without adding KH2PO4.
