Hello Fellow Members & Seniors,
I have a couple of new projects on my mind and for the time being, just researching before implementation.
I need to setup-
# 4*1.5*1.5 (01 nos.)
# Cubes sized 12*12*12 (06 nos.)
With the following plants-
#Rotala Sp Green
#Rotala Sp Brown
#Cryptocoryne Green
#Cryptocoryne Wendtti Brown
#Rotala Rotundifolia
#Staurogyne Repens
#Hygrophila Repens
#Echinodorus tenellus
#Hygrophila siamensis
#Hydrocotyle verticillata
#Eleocharis parvula
With the following mosses-
#Java moss
#Christmas moss
#Cladophora aegagrophila
#Pellia
#Riccia
With the following native shrimps-
#Macrobrachium pilimanus (to be housed in the cube 1)
#Macrobrachium agwi honey bamboo (cube 2)
#Caridina babulti (cube 3)
#Macrobrachium assamense (cube 4)
#Aranchochium cf. kulsiense (cube 5)
With the following fish:
#Black neon tetras (to be housed in the 4 feet tank)
#Gertrudae rainbow (to be housed in the cube 6)
The above are the details of the contents of the tank. The cubes would be using most of the moss on drift-woods and foreground plants. Rest of the plants are for the large tank.
Guys, I need to know what kind of DIY substrate can I use for the cubes and the large tank? Also, I am a bit budget conscious this time. I already have a planted tank prepared from commercial available components required in a setup. I would be having the large tank as a showcase for a couple of years. I need to know the recipe for a perfect DIY substrate which can be used in the tanks and which would be beneficial for the plants and safe for the shrimps and fishes. Also, I need to know the availability (in delhi) of the required components in order to prepare the substrate, i.e- coco-peat, vermicompost, humus, inert sand, etc.
I guess I have provided the necessary information required. Kindly give suggestions and information on the same.
Thanks in advance!
Regards,

Archon, I have to study on some of the shrimps for a perfect answer. Please give me some time.

Cocopeat+Laterite, this is the safest, what do you say rajeev ji
I have used cocopeat+laterite+vermicompost currently cocopeat+laterite+soilrite, in both combination i have kept RCS

Re: DIY Substrate & Livestock Compatibility.
Tank 48 X 18 X 18
Bottom layer: cocopeat soil
Middle layer: Soilrite (40%) + Latarite (60%). You can use clean normal soil in absence of latarite.
Top layer: Golden sand
Cubes 12 X 12 X 12
None of the plant in given list need any kind of substrate. You can use rocks, pebbles, woods to tie the mosses and plants.
Use normal fine gravels other than marble as substrate. Marble chips can change water chemistry.
Best of luck.

Re: DIY Substrate & Livestock Compatibility.
I have managed to get some laterite from one of the members of the group. But I have the least idea from where to get the right kind of soilrite & cocopeat. I decided on keeping a layer of ADA substrate topped with some river gravel (for the cubes). I need to know from where to obtain the soilrite and cocopeat (around Uttam nagar & Dwarka).

Devchitra,
Is it readily available at nurseries or elsewhere? And any landmark near or around Malka Ganj?
Thanks for the tip.

Re: DIY Substrate & Livestock Compatibility.
cocopeat is not of much use as a nutrient medium but just servs as a carbon source, also add some vermicompost and leaf mould,
please note that you should keep the tanks for atleast a week before introducing any livestock if you are going to use any DIY substrate.
