I disagree with Apuda in his suggestion to release the bird. I have been keeping these for the past three years and I painfully recall the first which somehow flew out of the cage. He merrily perched himself on top of the nearest tree and was happily chirping away. A hawk came down and made a hearty meal of him in no time.
These birds are mostly cage bred and are not capable of fending for themselves in the "Big Bad World".For generations they have been kept and bred in cages and have lost their natural traits of self preservation. So perforce, releasing the bird is no solution.
They do breed easily. But for that to happen you need to have a pair and also need to prime the birds for this. More on this if u r interested. I started with a pair at Delhi and ended up with over 20 within a span of 18 months. I gave away the birds at Delhi and just got one pair with me when I moved to Jabalpur and have already got 15. I do try and diversify my gene pool by exchanging some birds with pet shops. But my experience has been that most of them are sickly and seldom survive! They are also called parakeets and can be trained. Am now trying to train one! Anybody from Aquapetz with prior experience of training a Parakeet plz share. takeca

Thanks Romi. They are really prolific. I had a hen (I suppose that's the correct term) who regularly had clutches of 7 Eggs. The eggs are normally laid one every day and they hatch after 14 days. Invariably the last couple of chicks would never survive because the others would crowd the nest (pot) and not allow the last chick to even feed. Of course that hen was special I guess!
The effort in maintaining them is of course quite a bit! But then My mom enjoyed keeping track the most! She still inquires from my village down south. So its always worth!

Chicken would be a better word IMO. I would love to keep chicken myself.
I have been trying to find Polish Bantam since a long time.

I just saw this post of yours, JackDanio. Any idea what breed of Hen that was? We has hens too, when dad retired. It is common for people in Punjab to keep them in suburbs or villages, and there are so many excellent breeds available. But we came to know that the area in which my father built his house after retiring from the army, it was considered shameful to keep hens for some weird reason. We got such stares from them that one day we gave up. This was in Mathura, UP. Now we are back in Delhi and I want to keep a 2-3 cute hens again. I know there are several amazing desi breeds and the foreign ones adapted to Indian conditions now are good also. Any idea?

forgot to ask, what will be the minimum size for a cage if I want to keep 2 to 4 budgies? I am in the process of buying a bird cage these days.

I am planning to keep birds in big cage but as everyone thinks that putting birds in cage is not right and so do I. They should fly free but I came to know some birds are like our aquarium fishes, they will be killed by other wild species or died if we free them from cage or aquarium. Some species belongs to cage only as our fishes. If we put our aquarium fishes in ponds or river then they will be killed by other and same with few species of birds like love birds etc. For me keeping parrot in cage is not good.

I am totally confused. Looking for other views on this.
