all of these have pros and cons
LEDS are best right now very less heat and longer life

Watt Per Gallon rule is now old with the new technology lighting equipments. Follow the lumens per gallon rule.

Sai, apuda can lighten more on this.

W/G is no longer used. it used to calculate an approx value of lumens emitted by a standard T8 tube (excess of modern light meters to a hobbyist was very limited). For plant you need PAR and PUR values.

Suggest you to go with 3w/g decreasing will be easier than increasing, and add to fact few LEDs d blow off in experiment runs.

How to calculate all these PAR PUR values?

The thumb rule to calculate no of led is (The area of footprint of your tank / 22) mainly used to calculate for 3w high power led, example my tank is 36 X 18 X 24 so

36 X 18 = 648 sq inch, 648/22=29.4 so will keep 30, 30X3 =90 watt

That number doesnt take into consideration tank height. Am not sure how they developed it.

When you calculate the area you Dint include height in equation...did you observe the ambiguity ?

And 3W chinese and 3W Cree are 'zameen-aasman' diff.
