In my small tank 15by15by12, dancena swim at all levels when looking for food and grazing but most of the time they are close to the surface or near it.

There is a larger male who has taken over the bottom of the tank and won't allow the others to stay too long there.

At feeding time the O. dancena feed mainly at the surface but again some spend all the time midwater chasing down sinking bits of flake food.

The surface has reasonable amount of cover, bits of salvinia, hydrocotyle and leaves of C. spiralis.

flakes, bits and frozen food
yes, an ordinary wool mop. i just knot the wool, cut it above and attach it to styro foam.
dark wool makes it easier to find the eggs...but i prefer moss, it seems more eggs remain undetected in moss than in a mop

Do you have other plants also in the tank?

I ask because I want to know if the Oryzias have a preference for the mop/moss as compared to other plants with larger leaves. Will the mop work in a tank with plants (cryptocorynes mainly) already in it?

yes, there are other plants also, a few l. repens.
i don't know if they prefer moss...
i had the mop in the moss tank and they also used it...i think they are not too fussy bout their spawning places

The home-raised fish look brighter coloured to me..................... how lucky to have so many eggs just in time before loss of the parents. An undeniably beautiful species well suited to aquaria.
