I have finally decided to go for a localy made tank - 4ft long. What could be the ideal height and deapth?

48 X 18 X 18 is a ideal size for a planted tank. If you increase height, the lighting expense will be increase dramatically.

How about lighting, Should it be -

MH or PLL or T5 or in combination?

T5 are the best and feasible.

With MH, you need to cool the water.
PLL gives less lumen in comparison of T5s.

Also there is no harm if you opt height of 15, much easier for plants to grow with brand new 6 to 8 Phillips 36watt pll. Why I am saying coz you are not going for any advance aquascape, even all stem plants can be kept under good control within this height. Still 18 is also perfect.

and what about the substrate? Branded or River Sand?

length=4ft, width = 24inch, height =18inch, I think this will give lot of space for fish to swim, scaping, water flow, and also more plant varities. Just my suggestion as it will be future proof.

T5HO will be 54W, you can be happy using 4-5 Cooldaylight tubes. Am sure it will be a stunner, and I can get more plants soon :D :P
