Can I use these Rocks...?!?

Unread post by Keluthi »

Found these rocks near a small factory which manufactures 'chuna' (Calcium hydroxide). I think they are like 'limestones'(!!!?) and I want to know whether it can be used in aquariums or not?

why dont you try vinegar test?

IF the trick fizz, then its not good for aquarium use.

from the texture they seem to be crumbly and with time might dissolve.. better is to go with vinegar test and check. wait for other members to chime in.

we basically call it the Vinegar test as Vinegar is easily available. but the underline fact is that it is actually an acid test so anything which has good concentrations of acid can be used in the test.

take one of these stones and pour a little bit of vinegar / harpic / bathroom acid on one corner.
if the liquid bubbles and foams it means that the stone has carbonates / limestone which will leach into your water over a period of time and make it hard.
now if you have soft water and want to make it hard carbonate / limestone based rocks or substrate is good for your tank.
