Hi everyone
Is it advisable to use activated carbon in the filter in a planted tank ?
If so when / at what stage of the growth of the scape ?

Activated carbon gives an excuse to sellers to make an additional margin on a much-hyped but unneccessary product. They wouldnt like it so much if it didnt need regular replacing! Like UV filters, they are superfluous in a balanced and well maintained tank.

Of course, if you are one of those koi fish keepers, or discus keepers, who would rather buy something readymade like they buy dry food, and avoid water changes as far as they can stretch it, they can be useful.

As far as i know you, you need no such thing.

carbon in planted tank filter is worst.

+1 with carbon in planted tank is not a good idea ...

everyone rejected the use of carbon but no one gave the reason
carbon can take out ferts from aquarium water and your fert dosing won't be of any use

it will remove ferts and you will have to change it regularly i guess these are the main problems for carbon

you can use them in the initial phases of the planted tank as it will keep a check on the excess minerals and thus algal growth.
