Indian almond tree (Terminalia catappa) is a big tropical tree found in most parts of country. It grows upto 35 meters of height. The size of almond leaves varies from 15 to 25 cm long. They are dark green, glossy. But turned brown when fall down.
The almond leaf contains many chemicals such as flavonoids, tannins and saponines. It is believe in whole the world that keeping almond leaves in aquarium causes better health of aquatic pets (Fish likes acidic and soft water). They also work as water conditioner in the aquarium.
Almond leaves prevents bacterial and fungal infections. They also contain some chemicals which act as anti bacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant in the aquarium water. Due to these properties, fishes and invertebrates got healthy and stronger. Ideal water boosts the immune system of fish and invertebrates.
Almond leaves release heavy amount of tannin acids in the aquarium. Tannin affects the pH of the water and reduces the pH and metal toxicity. This can also be done by adding bogwoods in the aquarium. Adding almond leaves in the aquarium also adds yellow to tea color in the water. So these are best for blackwater setups. Betta breeders using these leaves due to these properties.
How to use almond leaves in the aquarium?
1. Do not choose leaves which have any type of fungus, debris or pesticides.
2. Wash these leaves carefully.
3. Store leaves in dry and airtight container.
4. Remove active carbon before adding leaves in the aquarium.
5. Replace these leaves after every 3-4 weeks.
Dosage
Use one leaf for every 20-25 liter of water in aquarium. In fry tanks, one leaf in enough in 40 liter water.
