changing filter media

i am using top filter and wanted to know that after how much time should i change the carbon,ceramic, sponge of the filter

size of tank-2*1*1.5 ft

Never change all the filter media at same time. Always keep a gap of 1-2 weeks in changing filter media otherwise beneficial bacteria colony will be no more. I have never used carbon but using ceramic and sponge. Changes both of the material after every year.

these provide a greater surface area for the bacteria to colonize, and there is no fixed rule as to how much to use the greater the number/volume the better it is.
