Glutaraldehyde is an organic compound used to sterilize medical equipments.
Use in Aquariums
1. It is used as a cheap source of CO2 and fertilizers in aquariums.
2. It is used as algaecide in aquariums.
3. It is used to control the population of snails in the aquarium.
4. It also kills the bacteria/parasites and useful in fish diseases such as Ich.
Be aware when using Glutaraldehyde.
1. Glut is a toxic compound so always wear gloves in your .
2. Keep your eyes away from the compound. Wear goggles.
4. Don’t try to smell, it is harmful for eyes, nose and can be suffered with headache.
Dosage
It can be used between 1.0 ppm to 5.0 ppm in a planted aquarium. This range is not harmful for most of the aquatic plants and animals. If you are keeping shrimps in soft water with low oxygen level, use glut carefully. But in hard water it will be less harmful for shrimps.
How to calculate the required dosage:
Suppose you want to dose 20% Glutaraldehyde solution direct with 4.0 ppm in a 100 litre water. The equation will be as:
Dosage of Glut = (Required Volume of water in liter X Required ppm / % Solution X 10000) X 1000 ml
Dosage of Glut = (100 X 4/20 X 10000) X 1000 ml
Dosage of Glut = (400/200000) X 1000 ml
Dosage of Glut = 0.002 X 1000 ml
Dosage of Glut = 2 ml
This 2 ml glutaraldehyde will be safe for flora and fauna both.
You can use syringe to dose glutaraldehyde safely.
Avoid with following plants:
1. Riccia
2. Vallisanaria sp.
3. Saggitaria sp.
4. Glossotigma diandrum
5. Pogostemon helferi
