Unread post by AquaSutra »

please go through the medical journal "Effects of Gluteraldehyde on Human Health"

http://joh.sanei.or.jp/pdf/E48/E48_2_01.pdf

While one wears gloves while handling it , uses it it in a place which has good fresh air flow however how sensible is it ok to dip hand in the aquarium treated daily with Glut for plant maintenance ?? :o

I believe in water in aerobic conditions...

Gluteraldehyde --> glutaric acid --> carbon dioxide

I think...

Half life is about 12 hours --> should be negligible concentration in about 48 - 72 hours.

Therefore the brilliance of using of gluteraldehyde as a gradual source of carbon dioxide.

Of course it is a poison but like all poisons there is a lethal concentration that you must achieve. Just like alcohol!

Sorry! Double post!

But you would be surprised at what aquarists put into their tanks - sugar, Vodka and what not.

Considering that the half life is 12 hours,
For how many days can I store a diluted 1.5% solution if kept away from sunlight?
For how many days can an opened bottle of 25% Glut be stored in a dark bottle?

The half life mentioned is for glut in biotic aquatic environments where it is broken down by microorganisms. I think it is quite stable in the glass bottles in the concentrations available. Low pH stabilizes glut to a half life of about a year or more, high pH results in a short half life of a few weeks to months and there occurs some oxidation in air but should not be of much concern with closed bottles.

No idea about the 1.5% solution glutaraldehyde really.

Thanks.....those are the facts I've been reading everywhere on the net. They all say the same thing but there is nowhere mentioned how long 1.5% solution can be stored. Hoping Scorpio and others who have lots of experience with Glut could shed some light

I would suggest you test your solutions pH. If at 7 then assume a half life of 100 days may be a little less.

Ok....I have PH strips at home....But with them it's hard to make accurate predictions
Till then, I must Dilute less of Glut for usage.
As far as I know, the water of our area has high pH and is hard. So I dilute my Glut with RO water
